Nick Cave’s autumn residency was multi-faceted, including, a Gallery Exhibition, student performances, Heavyweight – a team-taught course based on his artwork, a public career conversation, and three master classes taught by Nick Cave, focusing on Art:  Identity and Masking; Dance:  Touch and Go; and Theater Design: Find/Redefine.

Cave, a graduate of Kansas City Art Institute, earned his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and studied with Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre. Currently on the faculty of the Art Institute of Chicago, Cave has built a reputation as an educator and performance artist, especially with his ritualistic “Soundsuits.”  These sculpted, full body “Soundsuits” are layered in metal, fabric, hair and found objects designed to rattle and resonate in concert with the movement of the wearer.  The suits ritualize Cave’s feelings about the isolation and insulation attendant to being a black male in America.
