Dr. Mallika Sarabhai

This past April, internationally-acclaimed dancer, choreographer, and film actor Mallika Sarabhai came to AU for a two-day teaching and lecture residency, teaching a class in Bharatnatyam, a classical Indian dance form.

Dr. Sarabhai is known internationally for her work as both a highly-regarded classical Indian dancer and as a passionate advocate for social justice. Sarabhai, who directs the Darpana Institute of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad, India, has for years dedicated herself to educating audiences world-wide about contemporary environmental and social justice issues, including the ongoing problem of violence against women. Using the media of dance, theater, television, lecture, and essay, Sarabhai communicates, often provocatively, about trenchant problems affecting vast numbers of people both in India and across the globe.
