“Nicholas Leichter’s choreography is joyfully infectious”
The Marlin and Ginger Miller Dance Residency Program opened the 2006/07 season with world-class dancing by New York City’s nicholasleichterdance. Nicholas Leichter taught a dynamic, high-energy class that fused popular street dance forms with modern dance and ballet to over forty students. Whether accompanied by Carmina Burana or Bjork, this international company’s work was slow and sensual, insistent and intertwined, athletic and aware, and filled with provocative pairings. According to The New York Times, Mr. Leichter works with “the fusion of concert and popular dance forms with imagination and authority.” As it explored race and gender, the relationship between two dancers, and between street and traditional dance styles, the movement evoked a cultivated culture clash.
